A mysterious vintage Puma football shirt found in Lancaster, Pennsylvania appears to have connections to Mehring, Germany. But what club wore it, how old is it, and how did it end up thousands of miles away in the United States? State of Soccer is trying to solve the mystery, and we need your help.
Sometimes the best football stories are the ones you aren’t looking for.
While visiting a vintage store in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, I came across an old football jersey that immediately caught my attention.
It wasn’t Manchester United. It wasn’t Bayern Munich. It wasn’t a famous national team or an instantly recognizable European club.
In fact, I had absolutely no idea what it was.
The shirt was an unmistakably retro Puma football jersey, featuring a striking purple, black and white design. Across the front were several words that appeared to offer clues to its origin:
PHILIPPI
Kachelöfen
Mehring
I bought it.
And what started as a random vintage-store find soon became a much bigger investigation:
A Vintage Football Shirt With a German Connection
The most intriguing clue on the jersey may be the word “Mehring.”
That points the investigation toward Germany, but identifying the exact history of the shirt has proven much more difficult.
The jersey itself appears to come from an earlier era of football shirt design. There’s prominent Puma branding, a large sponsor across the chest and the type of distinctive pattern that immediately feels like it belongs to another period of the game.
But there are still some major questions.
What football club wore this jersey?
What season is it from?
Was it worn in competitive matches?
Who actually wore it?
And perhaps strangest of all:
How did a seemingly obscure German football shirt end up in a vintage store in Lancaster, Pennsylvania?
Those questions became the basis for a new State of Soccer investigation.

What Does “PHILIPPI Kachelöfen Mehring” Mean?
One of the biggest clues is printed directly across the front of the jersey.
The German word Kachelofen refers to a tiled stove, suggesting that the wording on the front is connected to a stove/heating business rather than the name of the football club itself.
There are also intriguing traces of the Philippi name in the broader region and heating/stove industry, although the web evidence I found does not establish a definitive connection between those references and this particular jersey. For example, current search results include a Philippi family associated with stove-related businesses elsewhere in the region, while historical material also documents stove and fireplace businesses around the Mosel area.
That’s exactly why I’m hesitant to declare the mystery solved based purely on internet searches.
A sponsor can tell us where to look.
It doesn’t necessarily tell us who wore the shirt.
The Details on the Mystery Puma Jersey
Take a close look at the shirt and several potential clues emerge.
There’s the vintage Puma logo on the chest. There’s the unusual purple-and-white grid design. There’s the PHILIPPI branding. There’s the reference to Mehring. And then there’s the construction and overall style of the jersey itself.
Any one of those details could potentially lead to an old team photograph, newspaper clipping, match program or former player.
That’s where this investigation gets interesting.
Because instead of simply researching the shirt myself and ending the story there, I want to see whether the football community can solve it together.

I’m particularly interested in old team photographs, player photographs, match programs, newspaper clippings, team rosters, club records, advertisements, catalogs featuring the Puma design, or photographs of another example of this jersey.
And there’s another reason to get involved.
You Could Be Featured in the Next State of Soccer Episode
This investigation isn’t ending with the first video.
I’m planning a follow-up episode built around the strongest discoveries submitted by viewers.
If you uncover credible evidence that helps identify the club, date the jersey, identify a player or explain how this shirt may have traveled from Germany to Pennsylvania, your research could be featured and credited in the next State of Soccer episode.
Think of the first video as the beginning of the investigation.
Now we’re opening the case to everyone.
Can the Internet Solve This Football Mystery?
Somewhere, there’s probably an answer.
There may be a photograph sitting in an old German newspaper archive.
There may be a former player who still has the same shirt in a closet.
There may be a football shirt collector who recognizes the Puma template immediately.
And there’s a chance that somebody in Mehring will look at this jersey and know exactly what we’re looking at.
Until then, the question remains:
Can YOU identify this retro football kit?
