As Philadelphia continues to embrace the excitement of the 2026 World Cup, one local activation is bringing communities together in a uniquely Philly way.
Earlier this week, State of Soccer TV founder and Philly Pub Cup creator Brian McDonough joined PHL17’s Positively Philly to discuss the city’s inaugural Philly Pub Cup, a month-long pub trivia tournament inspired by the passion, community, and competitive spirit of the World’s Game.
During the interview, McDonough was asked how the idea for the Philly Pub Cup first came together.
“Philadelphia has an incredible pub trivia scene. I found 10 amazing bars across the city and created the Philly Pub Cup a citywide pub trivia tournament,” McDonough said.
The concept was designed to combine two things Philadelphia does exceptionally well: supporting local neighborhood bars and embracing soccer culture. Rather than creating another traditional watch party, the Philly Pub Cup gives participating breweries and pubs the opportunity to compete in a World Cup-inspired knockout tournament while welcoming anyone to join the trivia nights through open play.
Throughout the interview, McDonough also showcased the tournament’s official trophy, custom Icarus Football jerseys, and merchandise, highlighting how each qualifying venue earned the opportunity to represent its bar throughout the playoff stages.
What’s Next for the Philly Pub Cup?
Following several weeks of qualifying rounds across ten Philadelphia breweries, the tournament has officially entered its knockout stage. Wild Card matches have already concluded, with the Quarterfinals now underway before the competition culminates with the Championship Final on July 19, coinciding with the World Cup Final.
The appearance on Positively Philly marks another exciting milestone for the Philly Pub Cup as local media continues to highlight one of Philadelphia’s most creative World Cup activations. What began as an idea to celebrate local pub culture has evolved into a citywide tournament that brings together neighborhoods, local businesses, and sports fans through friendly competition.
The Philly Pub Cup playoffs remain open to the public, meaning anyone can attend participating venues, play trivia alongside the playoff teams, and experience the tournament atmosphere firsthand.
